1941
The St. Louis Herb Society was founded in 1941 by six original members – four women and two men, under the leadership of Dr. Edgar Anderson and Mrs. Mary Baer. The first meeting was in February at the Museum Building (now the Stephen and Peter Sachs Museum) at the Missouri Botanical Garden. One impetus for the founding of the Society was the fact that the rapidly expanding hostilities of World War II were disrupting the import of culinary herbs – including Dalmatian sage (Salvia officinalis). Throughout America herb lovers were organizing to grow their own herbs. Thus, the first herb studied by The St. Louis Herb Society was sage.
