1966
On Friday, October 14, 1966, The St. Louis Herb Society held its first “Fall Harvest Sale”. It took place at the Missouri Botanical Garden, which was known locally as “Shaw’s Garden”, in a parking lot that was then adjacent to the Herb Garden behind Tower Grove House.
Members worked individually and in workshops throughout the summer to harvest herbs to make lavender sticks, spice wreaths, pomanders, chutneys, breads, jellies, vinegars, seasonings bags and potpourri. Items also included curry powder and seasoning salt, each calling for eleven ingredients from the Society’s own recipes. These offerings sold out in less than two hours.
