About Us

The St. Louis Herb Society (TSLHS) was founded in February 1941, by six original members (four women and two men) under the leadership of Dr. Edgar Anderson and Mrs. Mary Baer. Within a year we became a Unit of the Herb Society of America (HSA). (TSLHS became independent of the HSA in 1954.)

The initial goal of fostering the use and knowledge of herbs continues today to be the motto of The St. Louis Herb Society. We achieve this by planning, planting, and maintaining The St. Louis Herb Society Herb Garden, located on the south side of the historic Tower Grove House (Henry Shaw’s country home) at the Missouri Botanical Garden; by offering Spring and Fall Adult Education Programs; by a Speakers Bureau, an Herb Sale, and books on herb gardening and herb cooking. We are a 501(c)(3) organization and have a limited, but very active membership.

Any individual interested in becoming an active member of The St. Louis Herb Society must first complete a two year program of guided study in the use and knowledge of herbs. Those entering the provisional program commit to an energetic period of mentoring and nurturing by active members and are quickly immersed into the ongoing activities of this busy organization. At the conclusion of the provisional requirements, individuals may be invited into active membership.
